Tayabas! Tayabas!

I had to go to Tayabas, Quezon to photograph some interesting places. I was supposed to go alone but thought of inviting my mom and my daughter to accompany me so they too can travel. My first intention of having to go alone turned out to be a tour of 7. Yes we were 7 inside the van that made our way to Tayabas, Quezon through Barangay Gulang-Gulang. When we were about to enter Tayabas, Quezon it suddenly entered my mind what I tasked myself to do and knew right there and then how few knowledge of interesting spots I know of the town I was about to shoot.

It was a cloudy day but still, Mt. Banahaw remains to be the constant view wherever we go. First stop was Tayabas Public Market, I just thought public markets deserved to be in every town’s gallery. There’s nothing special here. It is the same old crowded, smelly structure that looks probably like your own palengke. We parked in front, never got out, lowered the window and click… there goes the market.

Next stop was Malagunlong Bridge, the oldest bridge in Quezon Province. This bridge surely looks old and certainly needs restoration. As I was making my way to get a good angle for a shot at the old bridge rain started to fall so I hurriedly took some pictures from either side of the new bridge next to it and dashed to the van.

Then we went ahead to what they call Budin Street and surrounding area located just a few blocks away from the public market. Budin Street is a narrow street with just 2 opposite sides full of pasalubong delights. Most stalls offer ‘budin’, local ‘tikoy’, ‘espasol’, ‘yema’ and ‘pastillas’. Near Budin Street are local landmarks like Ground Zero Pizza House, Shell Station with café and 7-11 convenience store. 7-11 store is a favorite hangout at nights.

After getting a couple of photo shots of the convenience store we moved to St. Michael's Basilica. This is a famous church in Quezon Province with its long aisle, arched ceiling, a beautiful altar and a storied past. Not too many cars can park right in front the church but it has a patio with a concrete stage and a somewhat interesting landscaped garden.

It was almost lunch time so we decided to visit Kamayan sa Palaisdaan. The place is a tourist spot. Known for its floating bamboo cottages, a lot of people come to have a taste of its food and feel its ambiance. El Pescado Bar of Kamayan sa Palaisdaan offers live band entertainment at night.

As my personal schedule allowed me limited time to be in Tayabas, Quezon that day, I decided to head back to Lucena City after eating. But not till we get a look at MCST Compound since the monastery lies near the route we were about to take. The monastery houses the Bishop Obviar’s Tomb, MCST Historical Gallery, Chapel and a well maintained garden. A feeling of calmness combined with the retro architecture make this an excellent site for meditation.

With Tayabas, Quezon having places of historical, religious and cultural interests, the image gallery of Quezon Province is off to a good start. Byahe na!
