Are you having problems taking good photos? Maybe you shot so many photos and didn’t turn out the way you perceived it to be.
So you think it’s because your camera’s not up to the occasion. But it doesn’t explain why some people can take good pictures with a point and shoot or even with just a cell phone better than you and your dslr.
Well, here are some tips you may find useful in taking your brand of photography to new heights.
- Know Your Camera
Read the manual of your camera and understand it as in really understand what you see in the manual. Know the functions of the buttons and how to navigate the menu. Learn how to change the settings, ISO, flash, metering, focusing, picture styles, customization, compensation etc. You will catch a lot of topics covered in the manual that gives light to more than just basic photography.
- Learn To Focus
There are different types of focusing and you have to know when each one is best used at a given scenario. For beginners, use center point focusing most of the time then recompose to get a better composition. Avoid using auto selection focusing from multi-point focus points. In most cases don’t let your camera decide where to focus or you’ll end up with blurred images unexpectedly. Use focus assist and understand the behavior of your camera during ai servo focusing if there is one.
- Practice Good Composition
Study how the rule of thirds can give your picture balance and harmony. See how leading lines can emphasize depth and perspective. Know how geometrics increase interest in your photos.Generally, the rule of thirds is applicable to every scenario you may encounter. When composing a shot, divide up the picture frame into vertical and horizontal grid of thirds. So 2 vertical lines and 2 horizontal lines will give you 4 intersecting points which is usually called crash points. Place your subject or the main element of your subject in one of those crash points and balance it by placing an element in the crash point diagonal to it. Or simply use the horizontal and vertical lines as guides for better framing, like when photographing the horizon you can place the horizon in the upper or lower horizontal line. See what happens when you follow the rules and when you try to break it. Also try different angles or point of views.

- Control Your Flash
It’s nice if you don’t have to use flash but the reality is you will utilize its service in many instances. If you can bounce the flash you can minimize making your photos look flat. Diffusers can soften the impact of flash. Without external flash it’s difficult to control flash. Flash is mostly indispensable on backlit subjects. When taking group pictures with flash, you can minimize underexposure by avoiding white colored objects in front of the group. Experiment on ways to not show shadows at the back of your subject.
- Play With ISO Setting
The lower ISO setting will give low noise in your pictures and offer sharper output. But higher ISO settings will enable you to catch the ambiance more vividly and will provide flexibility to your shutter speed requirement.
- Use Tripod
In low light conditions and when using long focal length a tripod is a must. The basic rule of using a shutter speed greater than your focal length is still applicable in the digital age if you don’t have a stabilized lens or camera. For special effects like making a triplet out of your subject, it’s best to use a sturdy tripod.
Apply the tips above for a better picture taking experience.
